Question

After most recent update Illustrator keeps crashing soon after opening.

Hello!

My laptop has a partitioned hard drive and of course Adobe wants to install on the Windows partition, which got too full to continue. I've since re-installed on the other partition. There was also a recent update for Illustrator, although that was before I shifted partitions.

Illustrator is currently crashing immediately after start-up. When first opening Illustrator there's no issue with crashes at the main screen, until I try to open a new or existing file - everything seizes up before I can properly select a tool.

I get a pop-up suggesting a fix, which links to the page screenshotted in the attachment and no, I don't have Hancom Office installed. Never have. Possibly unrelated, possibly relevent is that I don't appear to have issues with PhotoShop at the moment.

I'm curious if my laptop is insufficient for Illustrator as it's a few years old now (although as above, PS seems mostly fine at the moment); it is:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8300H CPU @ 2.30GHz

8Gb RAM

GeForce GTX 1050

Windows tells me the graphics drivers are up-to-date for that old card and the only drivers I was able to find online are for the 1050Ti.

Illustrator has to be installed in certain locations in order to work.

8 GB of RAM is at the lowest end of the specifications.

And in the past there have been a lot of issues with that particular graphic card. I don't know if they have been solved.

Try resetting your Illustrator preferences. this will put the program back to its defaults and hopefully eliminate any corruption that might be interfering with performance.

To do so on a Windows PC:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
