After radial repeat - how recolor individual intersecting shapes?

When making a pattern of a shape, like a circle, with Object>Repeat>Radial, can this shape be divided into individual segments that can then be colored individually? I tried the divide option in Pathfinder and also the Shape builder tool but only got this (see attached): "Select one or more filled paths".
