Question

After saving an EPS file the contents of one layer moves substantially when I reopen the file.

This is happening intermittently and all appears normal on screen when the EPS files is saving. It's only when closing and then reopening the EPS file that the movement occurs on a single layer. Normally this is a print layer that moves when the other layers are paths.

Let's nail down where the problem is occurring:

1. Open the EPS in Photoshop which will render it to an image (doesn't matter if it's CMYK or RGB for this test). If the items are in different positions in the rendered version, then the EPS was corrupted somehow.

2. Alternatively, open it in Acrobat, which will invoke Distiller and render it to a PDF. Again, if there are differences, the EPS is faulty.

Hi @chantelle_3011,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble with your EPS files. Could you please confirm the version of Illustrator and the OS you are working on, and whether the issue occurs with all EPS files or only specific ones? It would also be helpful if you could test saving the file as AI or PDF to see if the layer shift still happens, and if possible, share a short screen recording of the behavior.

Looking forward to your update.

Hi Abhishek

I am working on Illustrator version 29.3.1 and using Windows. It doesn't happen with every file, I can't spot a common trend in why it is certain EPS files.

Hi @chantelle_3011,

Thanks for confirming the details. Since you are on 29.3.1, I'd suggest updating Illustrator to the latest version (29.7.1) and testing again to see if the issue with the layer shifting in EPS files still happens. If it does, please try saving the same file as AI and PDF and check whether the content stays in place when reopening. This will help us understand if it’s specific to the EPS format. If you can, sharing a short screen recording of the save and reopen process with the shift occurring would be really helpful for the team to investigate further.

Let me know how it goes.
