AI cc 2017 slower than dirt, Windows 10, GPU preview issue??

AI is super slow and unresponsive on my pc workstation (i7 5930k: 4.0ghz, 32gb ddr4, 512 samsung 960 evo, Nividia 970 graphics, Windows 10), but I literally never have any problems running the same files on my 2015 mac pro with half the specs.

I suspect the main issue is with the GPU performance. Problems arise mostly when I zoom in and out of a document as I work.

• Menus become slow and unresponsive and document navigation slows down 100x.
• AI even slows down navigation in other apps I have open.
• Closing and reopening the document fixes nothing.
• When I reopen the document I no longer have the option of switching between GPU and CPU preview. It will be set on GPU preview but the controls are locked on CPU.

Only fix is to close AI and reboot the entire system. Which is really annoying.

Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I would love to know if anyone else is having similar issues and if there's any known workaround.
