Question

.ai file opening up as blank

Yesterday I saved a project as I always have, and shut off my computer after closing out of illustrator, however, when I reopen the file, I get a blank workspace and all of the layers are missing. I know it is not a mistake on my part, since I can see a thumbnail of the project, shown in "recent" when I open illustrator. I made a second ai file yesterday too, and that one opens just fine. What could have happened and how to I fix the file or prevent this from happening again? The project is only 671kb so I don't think it broke from being too big of a file.

Some silly but necessary questions to ask:

Are you in preview mode?

Are you zoomed in very tight - Cmd-0 / Ctrl-0 to get back to full document view.

After above, if you do a select all, is anything selected?

Are you in any weird viewing set up - Overprint Preview, Pixel Preview, Presentation mode?

If you open the doc in Acrobat is it still blank?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where is this file saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, plugins, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Please change the file extension from .Ai to .pdf and open it in Adobe Acrobat. Does it show any content in Acrobat?

Will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Vers 25.3.1

The file was saved in a folder on my desktop, where I save all my works.

I've made no new changes to the folder or the Illustrator file. I also haven't downloaded or updated any new programs or my computer in the past week or more. I have norton protection and as far as I now, it hasn't warned me of any threats or updates.
