Ai file saved as Adobe PDF: loses Artboard Names

When I save an .ai file as an Adobe PDF and I reopen it in Ai, all artboards are named as they were in the .ai file. (YAY!)

BUT

When I send the same Adobe PDF to someone else, and they open it in Ai, the artboards have been renamed to the default setting (Artboard 1, Artboard 2 etc.)

Specifications:

  •  The program we use requires artboard to follow a specific nomenclature, so I need the artboard names to carry over to avoid saving 2 versions of every file.
  • I am trying to save all Ai files exclusively in the Adobe PDF format as I have both Ai and non-Ai end-users, so this is most efficient.

Any tricks for this?? 😄

In case anyone else runs into this:

> Saving in Legacy format is the "quick" fix.

> Working on the same version of Ai is the better fix

And both of them edit the files? And then send the files back to you?

In that case this would be the road to desaster.

They are not sending the files back to me - it's a one way transfer from me to multiple end-users.

Are you using the same version of Illustrator that the people you are sending the PDFs to? I note a number of posts of people complaining of lost Artboard names over the years and it may be that using an older version of Illustrator to open your files would cause the artboard names to reset.

Thanks, Bill - that might be the cause! They are using an older version (2020) than me (2023). I'm wondering if there is any workaround for this (other than seeing if they can update to a newer version)?

Any ideas are welcome!
