Question

AI saving as PDF not saving .ai file

Is there any way to by get Illustrator to save the .ai file you're working on when you save as PDF? I know the solution is to click Save before save as PDF, but would prefer if it would just save the .ai automatically incase I forget to. This happened recently and I didn't realise until I went back to the .ai later and saw that all my edits hadn't been saved....

Thanks!

I don't think there's a way to get that without at least some little interventive action on your part.

My advice would be a behavior modification: Save the file (as .AI) as step #1 of your work, before you've even put anything on the artboard. During your work, tap Ctrl/Cmd+S regularly every time you can commit to the last operation completed. When the intent is to deploy, tap Ctrl/Cmd+S one last time, then Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+S to Save a Copy . . . as PDF. It's good that you realize you're not perfectly trustworthy, but this is the stuff of fundamental professional discipline. Work on it consciously just a few times, and it will become ingrained—effectively, an "automatic" feature of you.
