Aligning a Pattern Brush to be central on an objects path.

Hi,

 

I am trying to get a pattern brush that is applied to the path of a shape to be centered.  Its not an issue when I'm using it on a circular path.. but when I want to create something like this below... the issue becomes apparent, with a gap on one end of the path and it butted up on the other end.

 

Any ideas?

Presumably your brush looks something like this?

 

Make it like this instead:

 

Or make an end piece without the base:
