Question

All exported jpgs and pngs are pixelated

All the images exported from Illustrator are pixelated unless I make them insanely large.  I cannot upload these really large images to the website without incurring a speed penalty from Google.  Please help me figure this out.

I've tried saving the images a jpg and as a png (with various settings) and the only thing that works is if I make the image 6-8 times larger than needed.  These images are mostly a color background with whitish text.  I've tried 72 dpi, 300 dpi, 218 (because I'm running a 27-inch 5K iMac).  I've tried optimizing and not.  Dithering, no dithering, etc - basically different combinations of everything I can think of.

Any suggestions?

Do they have to be png or jpg? If you can export as .svg you can keep the vector quality of the artwork and avoid pixels altogether.

That's an interesting idea.  I can't currently upload SVG files but I'll look into adding a plugin.

Have you replaced the Preferences?

I just reset the preferences (just in case) and it's the same.

how big in pixel dimensions do you need them to be, for what end use, and how are you viewing them?

I'm making an image for 400 x 200 px image for a website. Here's a dummy example:

This is a screenshot at 100% in Illustrator.  I expect the final jpg or png to look similar.

But this is how it looks:

Your screenshot is double the resolution (144 ppi) of the Illustrator export (72 ppi).

Export at 2x or at 144ppi
