All layers opening up into sub layers every time I start up

Every time I open illustrator all the layers in my file expand showing every single sub-layer. This is beyond annoying because I have to close EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. How do I fix this????

@Joshua263417470qed to quickly close all sub-layers in a document, hold down the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (PC) while clicking on the top layer. This will collapse all sub-layers beneath it. When you save the document, these closed sub-layers will be preserved, so they'll remain closed the next time you open the file....see the attached mini video

I tried this, saved the file after collapsing all the layers and it still opens with the layers expanded.

Adobe - the status of the layers should be preserved at the last saved file.

We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. Would you mind resetting Illustrator's preferences as described in this article (https://adobe.ly/3AU1ua3) and checking if it helps?

Disclaimer: Please note that renaming preferences folders will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also save a backup of the folders in case you want to. The location is mentioned above.

I have recently installed 2026 (30.2.1) and I am now getting this same issue. It never happened before. I have reset preferences twice (much to my frustration) and it is still happening. Every time I update your software I encounter glitches or quirks that weren’t there before. Every. Single. Time.

it is infuriating, every time you open it there are pop ups and things broken. i want the old desktop versions back.
