Question

alt+drag Gradient Slider point changing the opacity of other points on the slider

Hi all.

I am getting seriously miffed. After using Illustrator ever since the nineties I can no longer do what I need so, so often: duplicating a color stop in a gradient while keeping the other stops as they are.

Say I have the following:

Stop 1 - position 0 - Opacity 0
Stop 2 - position 25 - Opacity 100

Stop 3 - position 75 - Opacity 100

Stop 5 - position 100 - Opacity 0

I need a zero opacity stop on position 50 and 'Alt-drag' the stop on either 0 or 100 to position 50 to copy it.
This always works, but no more

Instead, in the latest version it removes the opacity values from every stop it passes.

If I 'Alt-drag' an opaque stop the same happens, all stops that used to be transparent are now fully opaque.

It sometimes even affects stops in the vicinity, sigh.

I can't work like this. Can we hope for a speedy fix?

Hi there,

Sorry about the inconvenience. We can replicate this issue on a Windows machine. I will be sharing it with the Product team, and I would request you to please share it on our UserVoice page (https://illustrator.uservoice.com/). This way, you will keep getting all the updates related to this issue, and other users can also upvote.

In the meantime, please use the workaround shared by @Mike_Gondek10189183. i.e., Alt-drag Gradient Slider between two points first and then drag that new point to any position you want. By doing this, the new point will not change the opacity when it passes by other points, and you won't have to type opacity values for other points.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Thanks. I will post it there as well.
I had already done this the alternative way but it's more of a hassle, really. It would be great if this got fixed 🙂

You are right I noticed that on 25.4.1 win 10.

Instead alt-drag position 0 to 10 make a copy. Then drag position 10 to position 50. One extra drag than before, but you don't need to type in any opacity values.

Yeah, I know that but resorting to this takes too much time (I am so spoiled 😄 ). I simply want to work as fast as usual and Alt-dragging is the most convenient.

I cannot reproduce that in version 25.4.1

Did you try to restart your machine/Illustrator?

And maybe reset the preferences:

Thanks but no, this does not help. It's quite annoying.

I rarely restart, occasionally relaunch because, well, sigh... and on occasion remove the prefs file. But this one is a biggie that won't budge.
