Hi Illustrator gang!

Version 41 of Adobe XD introduces Angular Gradients. Is this possible in Illustrator?

Strangely, Adobe Illustrator still does not support angular gradients, or what some rival drawing applications call conical (or cone-shaped) gradients. CorelDRAW has supported conical gradients (or what they call fountain fills) going back to the 1990's. Affinity Designer supports conical shaped gradients. Photoshop isn't a vector drawing application (even though it can support certain kinds of vector objects) but it has been capable of applying conical gradient fills for a long time.

Conical (or angular) gradients is definitely a missing feature in Illustrator. The issue is even more glaring when considering the addition of freeform gradients to Illustrator, but not covering something more basic like conical gradients.

Hopefully the Adobe Illustrator development team will add the feature sometime soon. It seems like a pretty obvious one in need of inclusion, especially since some rival graphics applications already offer the capability. CorelDRAW can apply linear, radial, conical and rectangular shaped "fountain fills." It would only make sense for the Illustrator team to match that. There's hope they'll do so; the developers have been doing quite a lot with Illustrator in the past couple years and listening to user requests.
