Apply effects to Fill only in Illustrator.

Hi everyone.  My illustrator skills are pretty weak, so I was wondering if anyone in the community can help me out with a question?  Is it possible to apply a raster effect to the Fill of a shape BUT NOT the Stroke?  The best workaround I have for this is to creat a shape with no stroke, apply the effect, and then create a shape with no fill, placed over the shape with the raster effect.  But this way I have two paths, where I'd rather just have the one.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Check the Appearance panel with your object selected.

Select the fill item and apply the effect to the fill only.
