Applying clipping mask to only text outline

I've exhausted my Googlefu on this. I'm trying to apply a clipping mask only to a text outline. How do I accomplish this? I've tried converting Compound Path and it still ends up only filling in the text body instead of the stroke.

The black outlines are probably still stroked paths. Convert them to filled objects (via Object > Path > Outline), make a compound path out of them and use this compound path as a clipping path.

There are other ways, but this should work in any case.

give the text a white fill and black stroke, open

Window > Transparency

text at the top of image etc

select both

in the transparency panel Make Mask

maybe Clip and Invert ticked

Hi Jennifer,

If I'm understanding your question correctly, he easiest way to use text as a Mask is to NOT outline the type. In this way the whole text object is acting as a Mask.

But if I don't want the whole text object to be a mask?

Basically, I want the black outline in this text to be the only part of the text that acts as a Mask:
