Art Board issues

For context I am working on a project for college and I am making stuff at home, on a laptop, with connected creative cloud. I worked on making these pieces the whole weekend and I come back to campus to continue to work, this time on my PC, which can handle illistrator just fine, but find that the files won't export. I come to find out that my artboards are missing in all my files, not just the ones that I worked on over the weekend. I try to put a new art board in, but it won't place. I go to the artboards window and I can't add a new art board either. The only way I have found to "fix" this is to copy what I made and paste it into a new file, but after exporting, saving, and reloading illistrator to see if that fixed things, the art boards were gone again. Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm pretty sure this has been happening to me since I got it on my pc, I don't know why this is happening either.

Where and how do you save them? What do you mean by exporting your files?

I primarly save when I am pretty much finished, but I save sporadically while I am making my projects. I primarly use Ctrl S, but sometimes to make sure it's saved, I use File then Save. My Professor prefers us to export our work as a PDF then send to them. I do File - Export - Export As, then select a file to place it in. I will gladly specify on more if you need.

Export or saving as PDF can make you lose artboards when you open the PDF in Illustrator.

Always save as .ai when you are working on the file.

If possible save on your local hard disk and copy the results to a server if needed.
