What on earth can be done to stop the automatic artboard rotation without intent?

You can add your request with any comments to the Illustrator Uservoice page where the rotation feature was requested. After the feature was completed, the comments were left open for feedback that the Illustrator team would see--including requests for a means of locking the artboard.
