Question

Artwork randomly shifting when imported into Agfa Asanti

Hi everyone,
I work for a print company and we’re experiencing a serious issue that has only started happening in the last couple of months, despite using the exact same workflow for years without problems.

Our Setup / Workflow
We design in Adobe Illustrator

We send the AI file directly into Agfa Asanti (RIP software)

Asanti sends the job to our printer

All software is fully up to date (Illustrator, Asanti, OS)

The Issue
When we load an Illustrator file into Asanti, some artwork elements randomly shift position normally being images including PNG, JPG and TIFFS but all varying from different file sizes.
The original AI file is perfectly correct and shows no issues.

We have found to fix it we just need to resave the same Illustrator file again and re-import it and it's fine.

This never used to happen. It’s now occurring sporadically but frequently enough to risk production errors, which is a major concern.

Questions
Has Illustrator changed anything recently in how it saves AI/PDF structure that could affect RIPs like Asanti?

Is there a known issue with PDF data inside AI files not translating reliably to RIP software?

Is anyone else in production printing experiencing artwork shifting in RIPs recently?

Any guidance from Adobe staff or other print professionals would be hugely appreciated.
This issue could lead to large-scale production errors, so we’re trying to understand the root cause fast.

Thanks!

Just a rather vague assumption: Can you check if it gets better by disabling the "Save/Export in Background" option in the File Handling section of the Illustrator preferences?

I'm surprised your RIP software will take Illustrator .AI files. Most RIP applications require Illustrator artwork to be saved in PDF format.

It was one of the key reasons why we went for Asanti (RIP Software) as it was a key selling point, has worked completely fine for a couple of years and suddenly it's doing this

@shannon_incontrast Is the images placed as linked artwork or embedded? Try embedding the artwork in Illustrator.
