Assigning Specific Font to Data Sets Upon Batch Export - Variable Panel / Script?

Hi All,

 

Forgive my ignorance in this area, I am new to variables in Illustrator, but I'm working on a workflow to make translating graphics into other languages easier.

The Current Workflow: Essentially, I am using the Variable Importer Script to import a .CSV of 40 something languages as data sets in illustrator. Certain text strings in the graphic pull from the .CSVs in order to translate the words in the graphic. After this process is done, I batch export individual .AIs.

The Issue: Certain lanugages are auto-assigned a font in Illustrator if the default font is not available, (Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, ect.) and many times the default font is broken or missing characters. This requires me to go into the individual .AI files and change the font manually, to one that is not broken or missing characters.

 

My Ask: Does anyone know a sciprt that I could run at batch-export time that would auto assign certain data sets to certain fonts? For example, assigning the Chinese dataset to a more robust font that contains all characters that are missing in the default Adobe font for Chinese.

    after inputting the new contents of the textFrame, you can manually set the font like so:

     

    myTextFrame.textRange.characterAttributes.textFont = app.textFonts["Times-Roman"];

     

    You could then set up some conditional logic to ensure that each language uses a complete font that doesn't have missing characters.
