Asterisk can't be deleted and I can't adjust tab spacing

I'm doing my absolute nut here. I'm used to doing footnotes for my client and I've recently updated my Adobe Illustrator, and now suddenly when I type an asterisk for a footnote, it sort of jumps to the LH, and I can't adjust the gap between it and the rest of the text. Nor can I delete it. How do I turn off this feature? I can't seem to find any information about it online.

Edit, never mind. I was able to find out on Reddit – it's a File / Preferences / Type thing where you need to toggle off automatic lists. This was the one update I DID NOT ask for. So frustrating.

This is the most horrible bug default addition. I've been fighting this for weeks now.

I have to ask, why would you be doing this work in Illustrator?

You can turn off in Preferences > Type > Automatic Bullets and numbering
