Question

At the start of each new year I like to see if Adobe have fixed this bug from 2010. Sigh.

Good to see adobe respecting the 13+ year old tradition by continuing to make half the tools in Illustrator virtually unuseable for people with Wacoms.

The one thing which makes me the most furious involving the use of Wacom graphics tablets is Windows Ink. It is impossible for me to over-state just how much I absolutely HATE Windows Ink. It is an infectious scourge that has no business residing in the OS of any computer equipped with a keyboard.

In order for the Wacom pen/stylus to have any pressure sensitivity in Windows-based applications that Windows Ink garbage has to be enabled in the Wacom tablet properties dialog box. But when Windows Ink is enabled all sorts of truly exasperating nonsense happens.

If I use the pen to click on a text-based object or click into a text entry field this absolutely stupid pop-up jumps in the way, wanting me to hand-write text into that pop-up. The Windows OS has settings for Windows Ink that make no difference with that pop-up menu behavior. It doesn't matter if Windows Ink is set for "tablet mode" or not. None of the other options have any effect on this anger-fueling pop-up. I have an iPad Pro. There is a setting that allows hand-writing into a text entry box, but it is not turned on by default in the iOS settings; and it's very simple to enable or disable that feature. With the Windows OS and Window Ink it's not simple at all to disable extremely annoying features.

Windows Ink also alters tool behaviors in Illustrator in a very bad way. I routinely use GPU-enabled animated zoom. In conjunction with the Ctrl+Spacebar keyboard shortcut I press the pen tip down on the tablet and drag to zoom in or out. With Windows Ink enabled some odd circle thing appears on the screen when pressing the pen tip down and dragging. Animated zoom is effectively disabled.

Basically I have to leave Windows Ink disabled in the Wacom tablet properties and just settle for a graphics tablet that works only partially. If I want any pressure sensitive effects for artwork, I have to use my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to do that. At least there such an arrangement is possible to work without making me lose my temper. Wacom really needs to stop involving Windows Ink in their graphics tablet drivers. Window Ink SUCKS!!!!
