Automatically add used colors to swatch library?

with every update illustrator has become increasingly more difficult for me to use. I primarily use photoshop and the tools dont seemlessly translate from one program to the other so it makes workflow really slow for me because I am having to relearn how backwards illustrator tools work from photoshop ones.

I seem to be having an issue where colors I used in my illustrartor design do not automatically go into the color platte/swatches area anymore. I have to manually add the colors which is extremely annoying and time consuming. Is there a setting I am missing or am I do something wrong?
