Best way to create a 3D elliptical shape

I'm trying to make a 3D elliptical shape in Illustrator. I've done this by drawing an ellipse, cutting it in half and then applying 3D Effect> Revolve to one of the halves, which is fine. However, I then want to rotate the 3D shape slightly but this seems to mess up the Revolve effect - see image attached.

Any ideas?

How do you try to rotate?

  • rotate the path (half of your ellipse with rotate tool)

or

  • rotate in dialog window of the effect 3D revolve  -->  this is the correct way
