Big files - low performance

Hi all

I work in large format printing and i need to use Ai to impose multiple A5 artworks on a 8x4ft artboard, I have 15 files that are approx 500mbs each, i place them on my artboard (which takes too long), then i step and repeat them so i have an overall total of 75 A5 artworks on my artboard. 

I have upgraded my pc to a super high spec machine but im still facing low performance, its it possible to have the linked files, reduced somehow, or is there any suggestions?

Surely the artwork in my artboard should be a low resolution visual representation of the linked file in my folder and performance should be lightening fast.

Working with large files in Illustrator can be challenging, even with a high-spec machine. Here are some tips to help improve performance:

  1. Link, Don’t Embed: When placing images, make sure to link them instead of embedding them. This reduces the file size significantly. You can do this by selecting File > Place and checking the “Link” option.

  2. Optimize Document Raster Effects Settings: Lower the resolution of raster effects. Go to Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings and reduce the resolution to 72 ppi or 150 ppi, which is usually sufficient for large-format printing.

  3. Simplify Artwork: Reduce the complexity of your artwork by minimizing the number of anchor points and simplifying paths. This can be done using the Object > Path > Simplify feature.

  4. Manage Fonts: Install only the fonts you need and use a font management utility to manage them. Too many active fonts can slow down performance.

  5. Increase Memory Allocation: Ensure that Illustrator has enough memory allocated. This can be adjusted in the preferences under Edit > Preferences > Performance.

  6. Close Unnecessary Applications: Close any applications that you are not using to free up system resources.

your point 2. (Low-Resolution Previews) is probably related to InDesign. In Illustrator there are no corresponding options in the View menu.
