Bounding boxes will not resize

Wether it's an existing file or new I can't resize text or picture boxes to fit. I have re-installed Illustrator but to no avail. Do I have a preference or style set incorrectly?

    Makes sense. I'd start by trashing the Ai preferences. (reinstalling doesn't remove preferences necessarily)

    On the Mac preferences are located in users/[you]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 settings

    Not sure where they are on the PC.

    View > Show Bounding Box.

    Or do you mean you see the Bounding Box but it won't change?

      Yes. I can see the box and its handles but cannot resize it.

      Does that make sense?
