Question

BUG!

Hi @LuckyMuc

Thank you for reaching out. I agree with the suggestions mentioned earlier. If you still need help, please share a sample file. You can upload it to Creative Cloud and provide the download link.

Additionally, please confirm your OS and the version of Illustrator you're using. This will help us assist you better.

Regards,

Srishti

Hello Srishti,

It’s been almost a year since I first reported these errors – and they are still present!

Let me briefly describe the issues again:

There are actually two persistent problems. Either I get a message saying the document cannot be saved because it already exists (even when I select "Save As" and deliberately want to overwrite a file) – or, at the end of the save process, there’s an error stating that an ellipse cannot be closed. The first message appears in both Photoshop and Illustrator, while the ellipse error only occurs in Illustrator.

If I repeat the process without changing anything in the document, it sometimes works on the second or third attempt. The same applies to “Save As”.

I have also noticed that the ellipse problem occurs even if there are no vectors in the document at all – for example, if there’s only a photo (jpg, png, psd) in the file.

I haven’t changed anything on my system in over a year, as this is a dedicated work PC.

OS: Windows
Version: 10.0
Processor Architecture: x86_64
Installed Memory: 98,163 MB

GPU Information:
Illustrator Version: 29.5.1
OpenGL Version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 572.16

I would be happy to send you a file that triggers this error, but I can’t even create one, because the save process fails every time. And in a working EPS, you probably won’t find any error at all.

Hi @LuckyMuc,

Thanks so much for taking the time to follow up, and I completely understand how frustrating this has been.

Just to help move this forward: would you be able to try disabling GPU Performance under Preferences > Performance in Illustrator, then relaunch the app and see if the error still appears when saving as EPS?

Also, since the error shows up in both Illustrator and Photoshop when overwriting files, it might be worth testing if running Illustrator as administrator changes anything, or trying to save to a completely different directory (like your desktop) to rule out any folder permission or sync interference.

If it's still reproducible after that, I’d be happy to bring this to the team internally. Just let me know what happens with the steps above, or if you're able to screen record a failed save attempt, that could help a lot too.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek

Also - Win10 64, Illustrator Version 28.5

Das kommt sporadisch. Egal ob da nur Text drin ist, oder Bilder mit dabei sind. EPS Einstellungen sind so wie sie vom Illustrator vorgegeben sind. DA habe ich noch nie was verändert.

Does the artwork contain any transparency effects? The EPS format does not support transparency. EPS also does not support some other advanced features and effects in Illustrator. PDF is a far better exchange format for artwork generated in Adobe Illustrator.

Hi Bobby, in my case is PDF not the better option for my Mimaki Rasterlink.
1. Its many times not possible to save PDF in the sizes I need.
2. When I print PDF, Rasterlink use the exakt size from PDF. If I use eps, is the size not important, only the datas inside.

I use Win10, 64bit, Illustrator Version 28.5. I dont change any things to save eps.. all in the original settings.
And, I use Illustrator since more then 16 years, do always the same. There is nothing new now what I changed.

The error is not always. Last night I maked a test. Created a new document, insert a copy from a other open document ans saved as eps. One time goes, next time, with the same datas, was not possible. Then again, and work again.

When I save the file before as ai and after as eps is no problem.

And no, there are no transcarency effects inside. But I can repruduce if u want.

RasterLink Pro has options to scale artwork to larger sizes and even print tiles of the artwork for really big jobs. That option will overcome the size limitations some applications have with saving artwork in PDF format. RasterLink Pro has an Adobe-certified PDF engine. It can print PDF files that have transparency effects and even things like free-form gradient fills. The EPS format doesn't support any of those features. On a somewhat regular basis our shop will receive artwork, corporate brand assets or other materials that have features baked into it that rely on Adobe applications to edit and PDF to output it accurately in print. We have a Mimaki flatbed printer at my workplace that is controlled by RasterLink Pro. Onyx Thrive runs our other big printers.
