Question

Bug when duplicating a layer group

Hello,

For several weeks now, I've been experiencing a recurring issue in Illustrator.

Whenever I duplicate a layer group, the original layer group gets completely modified.

To illustrate:

I'm drawing a face, so I have a group called "Face" containing several subfolders/layers (Nose, Mouth, Eyes, Shadows, Highlights, etc.). When I duplicate this group to use it for an alternative version of the same character within the same document (using the Alt/Option key and dragging the layer into a folder above), the original group, the source one (including all its layers) suddenly changes to a single color.

I've encountered this issue multiple times over the past few weeks. Recently, after editing the duplicated group ("Face 2"), I went back to the original group and everything had turned green. I had to redraw everything from scratch.

It's becoming a nightmare, and this problem has been occurring repeatedly for several weeks on my end. Any solution please?

Hi L0KiTo,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry to hear you're experiencing an issue with layers. In addition to what our experts have suggested, could you please share the screenshot of your layers panel showing the settings, or maybe a short recording of your workflow for better understanding?

Please tell us the details of your operating system & the version of Illustrator installed on your machine.

Does that happen with all files, or just this one?

We will try our best to assist you further.

Thanks,

Harshika

Illustrator 30.4

I explained the details of the issue above. Saving the workflow would not be helpful because the problem seems to occur randomly, at least from what I can tell.

At first, I thought Illustrator was glitching because I had too many layers. However, I restarted and tested with a new document that is only 50 MB, and I encountered the same issue there as well.

I'm using a MacBook Pro with 24

GB of RAM running macOS Tahoe 26.5.1.

This sounds like the layer you’re moving things to has a fill applied. In this example ‘Layer 2’ has a magenta fill above the contents:

Check your layers for stray appearances.

nope, i already check this option…
in the last case for example… i duplicate a group this morning…

All my strokes have suddenly turned purple.

It's very strange because I only drew some purple lines in a new layer group.

The old layer group was hidden, so I don't understand why this happened.

Can you show your layers and appearance panel, with the appearance for the layer you’re moving to selected?
