Calculate used area in percentage?

We are working with packaging design, and upcoming new rules mean that you can no longer print on more than 60% of the packaging surface. If it had only been solid surfaces, that percentage would have been fairly easy to calculate, but now it applies to text, different shaped logos, etc.
So what we are looking for is a simple way to see/calculate how much/percentage of the design area has been used.
For simplicity, we can assume that the packaging material is white (does not count) and all design + text + logos are in color (counts as used area).
Grateful for smart advices & suggestions!

You may also take a look at the application called "PressPerCent".

Thanks for the suggestions! I have tried PressPercent, it came very close to what we are looking for, "unfortunately" it is too smart and counts the opacity ... ie where there is 25% of a color it reports 25% coverage when in our case it must be counted as 100% consumed area.
We can of course get around it by remaking the design where all the color is in 100% but sometimes 20 packages are made in a range, in a dream situation you could have seen directly in Illustrator (through a plugin or similar) how much of the printing area was used.
We keep experimenting, thanks again for your suggestions!

I haven't used PressPerCent for a while, but I seem to remember that it can be adjusted in the application preferences how the area coverage is displayed.

The plugin InkQuest calculates this kind of stuff. I would check out whether it helps you with that task.
