Can I create an effect like this with a fill in Illustrator

Hi, hoping for some help here. I’m trying to create a design where the grey lines follow the outer shape perfectly. I achieved this effect by creating two paths and using blend to get the intermediate lines. It sorta works but even with manipulating some of the points manually it’s not perfect.

Does anyone have a way of creating a better version of this?
