Can I prevent Illustrator from automatically checking the links?

Hello,
I have an Illustrator file in which several images are linked. For legal reasons, however, the images must be stored externally. Since Illustrator checks the links every few seconds, the program freezes for approx. 3 seconds during the check, because of the external storage.
Is there a way to stop this automatic check to ensure a smoother workflow?

Hi, I'm sorry but at the moment I don't think there is a way to get out of control. However, better performing storage could help.

I don't think so. At best I would imagine you could creatively use the Rasterize/ Flatten option in the object menu to create placeholder data and hide the original source, but otherwise your only real solution is to get faster storage. Three seconds by today's standards sounds awfully long and a Thunderbolt drive with an SSD should not have such issues.
