Can't blend colors together

Hi, I’m trying to soften the edges of the shading on a tree (pictures attached.)  As a possible workaround, I added a gaussian blur to the shading as my expectation, but I can’t get a similar look if I were to choose Object<Blend<Make.  Instead, it gives me some wonky results.  What can I do differently?
