Can't change keyboard shortcuts in Illustrator

Question

When I try to assign a keyboard shortcut by typing into the proper spot, nothing happens.  If this is a bug, I can't find it on the community boards. I am using version 26.4.1

Make sure when select an item to assign a shortcut, that the item is not only selected (where the line is bluish-gray), but the place where you type is selected. The field will turn a darker gray and show a blue highlight around the box.
