Can't finish previewing

So I have a deadline and the window "Can't finish previewing" keeps appearing.  There was no warning and started happening during regular work flow.  I have managed to overide by quitting and restarting Illustrator but now I can't do anything.  

I'm using Mac OS 10.12.6.  I can't seem to update Illustrator and have no time to update the whole operating system.  

Has anyone any idea how I can get around this?  This is so URGENT!

Did this start after using a particular effect, or on performing a particular action?

If not, what does the document contain?

No, no particular effect.  Very repetative work.  'Place' small jpeg in new file, create new layer and trace using pen tool.  Very basic work with strokes and fills.

If you are able to switch to outline mode, does the message stop?
