Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing while opening the files. I am hopeful that the issue is resolved by now. If not, in addition to the information asked above, I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Where the files are saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.

Looking forward to your response!

Regards,

Srishti

How are you opening the file? Are you drag and dropping on top of the application dock/ toolbar?  If double clicking on the file is not working, your file associations might need fixing.

What happens when you open the file, do you get a message, crash, spinning cursor, etc?

1. Sometimes when you download files from an FTP site (occasionally also email) you may see a file extension .ai.ps. You can simply rename the file without the .ps (you'll get a window asking if you want to make it an .ai or leave as is).

Once the Mac deletes the .ps from the end it recognizes it as an Illustrator file. (PC capability unknown to writer)

2. Might be an incompatibility issue with save settings.

They can save as a pdf and resend art, just make sure they have these settings:

PDF SAVE BOX: make ure these boxes are checked:

1. Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities

2. Create Acrobat Layers from Top-Level Layers

NO COMPRESSION

NO SECURITY

Then you can open it directly in Illustrator.

If that doesn't open in Illustrator, open it directly in Acrobat:

Go to : Flattener Preview (Tool)

check: convert all text to outlines

Hit Apply.

Save as a copy (keep original intact).

Now it should open in Illustrator.

This might open, but cannot be edited efficiently. This is a workflow when you have no other chance to get the file at all, but not advisable for the first attempt.

Correct. This is a destructive method.

Does the file have an extension such as .ai, .eps or .pdf? Any of those file types should open by double-clicking on them. If the files have .jpg or .png or .tif then open the program and use File>Place and navigate to the file on your computer and it should open as a placed object. If the files don't have a file extension try adding one (you may have to try all of them until you get lucky, but try .ai first).

How do you transfer the file? If by mail or internet, try and ZIP it first.

Do you save directly to or open directly from a server? That's not a good idea.

Can you tell us the exact error message?
