Can't place large size CMYK in Illustrator

Hello, I'm using 28.4.1 and I cannot place a large file (around 500 megabyte+) in illustrator. If i use the place command and choose my CMYK tif/psd/jpg, I get the spinning wheel on mac, and then nothing happens. No image will be placed, no image is in the link window. If i place the same file but an RGB version it is fine. If i place the RGB file, and save the .ai file, but externally change the tif/psd/jpg to CMYK, when illustrator asks to update the linked file, i will get an error. If i open an .ai file, that has a linked image that has externally been converted to CMYK, it will thow an error when i open it. All .ai files are in CMYK mode.

my specs: mac book pro, apple m2 max, 64gb., Illustrator 28.4.1

When you place an image in Illustrator, it will be uncompressed.

If the file shows a 500 megabyte size in the finder, the uncompressed size will become very large.

It may exceed Illustrators limits.

What is the resolution of the file and is that really needed for the dimensions you will use it?

I am making walls size art so its like 6 meters x 3 meters & 150 dpi. File sizes can be 1 gig or more sometimes.

Do you need CMYK for that?

It is probably a large format printer that can do the conversion from RGB to CMYK.
