can't save illustration

all the prior posts on this are old and not helping.

just got a new macbook air. plugged in the external hard drive I ALWAYS use, tried to save a new illustration and get the following error:

Can't save the illustration. You do not have enough access privileges. ID: -5000

The external HD is set to read and write for all three permissions. Not sure what else to do here.

Can you save to the internal harddisk?

One of my external harddisks also can only be written on one of my machines. I have yet to find out why, but it's a permission issue as well.

Try creating a new user profile on the mac, seems to solve a slew of problems...
