Can't select objects individually

When I try to select multiple objects the two objects I select just merge into one unified selection so that prevents the "Minus Front" tool in Pathfinder from working. Instead of deleting the desired selection it just deletes everything because everything becomes selected.

I just solved it myself a few minutes ago. Apparently I had to go to Object and select "Ungroup" I have no idea what that did, there were no visible changes, but its working again at least.

Can you show that, 2 objects selected with the Layers panel fully expanded?
