Can't turn AI image into true transparent background.

I licensed image #371069095 and when I open it in Illustrator, the background is gray and white squares. When I hide the background layer, the image looks completely different. I am needing to move this image into Photoshop to add an effect to an image. Am I missing something?

Those files are not meant to be edited like you intend.

Without seeing the actual contents of the layers, it appears that the lower layer is being used as a Clipping Mask (object>clipping mask>make). When you hide it, it can't do it's job.

You SHOULD be able to import the whole original AI file into Photoshop and retain it's transparency. Please let us know if that isn't working.
