Can you use color picker when setting gradients in Illustrator?

I'm able to set up a custom gradient in Illustrator without any problem, but I wanted to know if there's a way to use the Color Picker when setting your custom colors or if you're restricted to the narrow color bar (which has all the colors but feels harder to use to me)?

Click on the color stop you want to change in the gradient panel/palette. Then, double-click on the fill box at the bottom of your tool panel/palette. That should bring up the color picker, and the color you choose will be applied to the stop in the gradient on which you had clicked.

Alternately, double-click on the fill box with nothing selected to bring up the color picker. Choose your desired color, then drag the color from the fill box to the swatches panel/palette to create a new swatch. Later, with the gradient panel/palette active, you can drag swatches directly onto the color stops to edit your gradient.

Thanks.  The swatches method was just what I was looking for!
