Question

Cannot add stroke to image

I am v used to photoshop but just got AI to vectorise images for cutting on a laser printer.

My images outlines are appearing as double lines, so my cut out shape is not cutting correctly.

I know I need to adjust the stroke for this, the problem is I have watched videos and read and read articles and whatever I do I cannot even see the stroke. My image doesn't even have 'an appearance'. I really don't want to buy another program.

I have tried an outlined image and a solid image. I have tried jpegs/ pngs

It doesn't help that I am not familiar with the program so I really do not understand the directions  that are written down.

I would really appreciate any idiot proof suggestions, I've literally spent hours and hours trying to cut out a very small acrylic elf 😞

Thanks for your reply. I have tried a copy. From what i can tell adding stroke does nothing visually at all to my picture. I have the stroke window up and changing colour or size of it makes no difference. I can see where i need to align it to be where i want the line but tgeres no stroke line.

this badger is an svg file created with image trace but the blue line cuts as s double line. I have tried to add a green line around the badger but nothing is visible

What I want it to cut out the outer edge of the blue line so the badger has the blue outline. But the blue line cuts as a thin outline strip that falls off the badger. I thought adding stroke so I could set the alignment at the edge of the blue line would work but despite following videos online when I copy what they do no stroke line appears, I just cannot understand what I am doing wrong.

So you are placing images in Illustrator and then you need to have an outline around them?

Please when showing screenshots, use Apple's method to take them so that we are able to read anything on them.

Did you try to use Image Trace on (a copy) of your black image? Check in the Advanced options "Ignore Color" to get rid of the white background.

Expand and switch fill and stroke (Shift X)
