Cannot copy & paste in Illustrator as of this morning

If I use the Keyboard shortcut Ctrl + C or Ctrl + X to Copy or Cut, Illustrator will not cut (delete) the object, neither will it copy it, and the Paste option is greyed out and will continue to stay greyed out for the remainder of the time I'm in the program.

If I restart the program and manually select Copy from the Edit menu, then I am allowed to Paste it as I please (Paste, Paste in Place, etc). Otherwise if I elect to use the Keyboard Shortcuts for any of the aforementioned actions, the whole system breaks and I cannot manually copy or paste things from the menu anymore.

Any insight as to what is causing this using the information I provided?
