Cant add fill to text

Hello, I wanted to color "text on path" with gradiant.

I know that in order to do so, usually I go to the apearance panel and press "add new fill" which lets me choose the gradiant I want.

For some reason, right now this option of "Add new fill" (or stroke) isnt available.

any thoughts?

Select the type object with the selection tool.

Give it a fill of none.

Add a new fill in the Appearance panel and make it a gradient.
