Cant seem to install a new font in illustrator

I cant seem to install new fonts in illustrator. When I click "add family" or "add font" in the Adobe Fonts browser it says "an error occured when trying to add fonts" and I do not know why. I am signed in to the creative cloud desktop and illustrator and have updated both recently. When I try and add them in illustrator in the Character Window under "Find More" I can click on the cloud to activate but it just gets stuck on "activating.. " and does not load.

What am I doing wrong? I am using macOS Catalina.
