Question

Centering Text in a Rectangular Grid

I made a map grid using the Rectangular Grid Tool. I want to center text numbers in the middle of each box. Can't seem to make it work with the Align tools. Is there a way to center nuber inside of each indivdual square in the grid?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd make a text block exactly the same size as an individual grid box, step and repeat as necessary, select them all, group, then center that block on your grid. You may need to finagle the vertical alignment a touch as the default setting in Illy is slightly off. (If you convert to outlines, center that, then use that as a guide for your live text). If you want to link the boxes so you can throw a tab-deliminted text file into it, I suggest doing it in ID, much nice text tools there.

Tee, Hi.

I would use Effects>Transform.

Create a square with a stroke. Add some text, align center.

Group your square and your text.

Next add (2) Transforms. Effects>Transform.

Next Object>Expand Appearance.

Your text is still live. Just type in your numbers.

Edit: Think of it as if it’s a spreadsheet or Table.

Each square or shape is treated as if it’s an individual cell with text or whatever you want.

It’s really a pattern after all.

Customize as you wish. 😀

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

Also, can you share a sample Illustrator file with the grid you created?
