Change in character tab/window

Yesterday I was working with a layout and looking over fonts. Today I go back in and start working on a new project and for some reason the character window is now different.  I can not change the width of the tab, and when I go to look at the fonts I can not see the example only the names.  It was VERY helps to see what I was looking for before I would choose.  Did it seriously change overnight?
