Change the spell check to English:USA? Illustrator CC 22.0.1

How do I permanently change the spell check to English:USA?

When I do a spell check it invariably reverts to Spanish. I need it to be in English. I changed the language to English:USA in the Character Panel but midway through the spell check it changed back to Spanish. Document setup has English under Type.
