Characters/Fonts are completely missing from character tab.

Recently, Illustrator and other adobe programs all randomly remove every single font from the program. The only way I can fix it is by going into the font file and deleting and replacing all the fonts. Then it does it again and I have to redo it. Is there any reason or permanent solution for this or am I expected to do this every three weeks when illustrator decides that it hates me?
