Clarification on how to use freeform gradient with live paint

Hello. I am having trouble with the freeform gradient tool. I can apply other gradients to the shape I want, such as the linear and radial, without issue. But when I select the freeform gradient, it simply gives the pointer with the circle and slash symbol, and will not let me do anything and does not inform with a pop with why it's not working. I am NOT trying to copy a gradient from another shape, because I understand that stops put outside of a shape do not show up wiht the freeform gradient: my problem is that Illustrator will not let stops be placed at all. If it helps I have used the "live paint" on the shape and it is labeled as a "live paint" in the sub-layers menu.

Thank you if you can help.

Try the following:

1. Do you have a closed shape? All points must be joined.

2. After selecting a shape make sure you are in fill and not stroke. Fill is what needs gradient.

3. Make sure you are now on the direct select arrow tool that is filled in white (solid).

4. In the tool panel make sure gradent is selected.

5. Gradient panel should pop up already if not go to Illustrator/Window top left of program. List: Gradient then go to panel.

6. Top section of panel see types. Choose third right gradient box called Freeform Gradient.

7. At least one to two gradient points pop up somewhere in the closed shape.

8. Move points around. Highligh one then click elsewhere within the shape and a plus add symbol pops-up with a new circle. Click empty space.

9. Ask me another question if none of that works.

Good luck!

I have taken the liberty of adding to your subject line and marking your solution as correct, in case someone else has a similar problem. Thanks for the followthrough.
