Clipping mask deletes outline

I have  a shape I made.  I have it in a layer above a grid I made using the rectangular grid tool.

I was able to clip the lines but I lost the outline of the shape.  I am sure  I could paste one back in, but I want to know what I am doing wrong.  You can see the outline because everything is still selected.  But if I deselect it, the outline is gone.

It is normal behavior for the previously applied stroke of an object used to create a clipping path to lose that stroke. Once you've established the mask you can select the outside path with the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) and reapply the stroke.
