Color not filling in

When I make shapes, they won't fill in with the color selected. I attached a photo of what it looks like. How do I make the entire shape fill in? Thank you!

Presumably 1 is what you are aiming for, and I'm guessing that 2 is approximately how you have built it. Even though the top of your structure looks like a closed shape, Illustrator thinks the top is just the two-segment path and can only fill it between those end points. It's necessary to enclose the space that you want filled, as in 3 or 4.
