Color Picker - Not sampling from JPGs

My color picker has been acting strange. It samples from vector graphics perfectly but it has suddenly stopped picking colors from linked/embeded JPGs. I've adjusted the color picker settings to every configuration available and the issue is still there. Anyone know what's causing it?

I'm running Illustrator CS5 on Mac OSX 10.11.5.

    Double Click the eyedropper Tool, and Make sure "Appearance" is Turned off.

      Have you tried resetting the Illustrator preferences to see if that makes a difference?

      I reset the preferences after reading similar issues in other forums, but there is no change in behavior.

      Shift-clicking does not work?

      What does "suddenly" mean? Did you update your system recently?

      You are running CS5 on a system that's not fully compatible, so your issue might be related to that.

      It was working fine one day, then the next day it didn't sample.  No updates, nothing has been installed. There's 8 more computers setup identical to mine that behave normally, so I don't think it's a compatibility issue.

      Regular clicking produces a no-fill, shift clicking produces black.

      Edit:

      I just tried embedding the images. Shift clicking samples correctly then... but it won't work with linked images. Before a regular click would sample from a linked image.
